OUR STORY · COLORADO, SINCE 2023
It turns out there is no such thing as “just a chicken.”
We got our first chickens in 2023. We expected eggs. We did not expect an entire cast of characters, each with a personality, a set of quirks, and a very firm opinion about something.
In exchange for safety and the basics, they gave us so much. They taught us to slow down and notice the little lives we had walked past. Before long, we were watching the other birds around us, too, seeing the incredible roles they play in the world. God made them truly unique.
Our flock grew. So did our hearts.
Our chicken obsession became a calling to rescue birds from shelters across Colorado. We have loved and lost many wonderful chickens. Every one of them holds a special place in our hearts, and their stories belong here.
And then there was the branch.
One evening over dinner, we looked out at the run. Three chickens had somehow wedged themselves side by side on a branch leaning against the fence. We laughed. “Well, look at that. Three chickens on a branch. That would be a cute name for something.”
Months later, our church introduced us to World Vision. When the church held a fundraising market, I came out of candle-making retirement for the children. I made eleven candles and needed a name. That little branch moment came right back.
Eleven candles. Four hours. Over $200 raised at our table for children in need.
People loved the name, but what stayed with me was how different it felt to make something for families who needed help. I came home and began Three Chickens on a Branch.
A little silliness. Something worth doing.
Now we make candles with the same warmth and quirks our chickens bring to our days. For every candle sold, we commit $1 to monthly giving through World Vision’s chicken gift option. Together, we can help more families experience what these remarkable little creatures can give.
The church-market fundraiser is the beginning of our story; it is separate from our ongoing $1-per-candle giving promise.
